Q.) I’m interested in having my hair chemically straightened, but I don’t completely understand the process. Exactly what does relaxing involve?

A.) When a person’s hair is relaxed, it is chemically straightened. A relaxer works by penetrating into the cortex and breaking the strong chemical bonds that make hair curly. Relaxing hair begins by protecting the skin around the scalp with a protective cream or oil (such as petroleum jelly).

A relaxer chemical is then applied to dry hair a section at a time and hair is processed for a specified time. Then, a rinse and neutralizing shampoo is applied to stop the relaxing process. Since relaxing can leave hair in weakened condition, a deep-penetrating treatment is often the final step. A mild straightening solution should be used on fine hair.

Q.) How do I decide which relaxer to use for my type of hair?
A.)     If your hair is fine use Regular Strength relaxer. If your hair is normal / resistant or coarse resistant (most Pacific Island hair) use Super Strength relaxer. However if you have colour in your hair always use Regular Strength but once hair is bleached or lightened, never apply hair Relaxer.

Q.)  Can a relaxer be used on hair that has a curly perm put through it?
A.) No, you should not use any relaxer over hair that has been permanently or “cold” waved. This can lead to excessive dryness and probable hair breakage and loss.

Q.)  How often should I relax or perm my hair?

A.) Some hair types grow faster than others, therefore we recommend at least every 5 – 8 weeks for Afro / Frizzy hair (African / Fijian descent) and every 10 to 12 weeks for curly to wavy hair

What are extensions and what can you do with extensions? Extensions are a type of hair addition that can subtly or dramatically change the way a person looks. Many people use extensions to add length and thickness, but you can also use extensions to make your hair look shorter (full coverage weaves) or change texture (such as temporary braids or dreadlocks).

Extension hair is sold in one of two ways. It is either “wefted” or it is sold as “bulk” hair. Wefted hair is commercial hair sewn on a fine base and used in the process of hair weaving. Hair is referred to as wefted or weaving hair. Bulk hair is a term for loose commercial hair that is not bound in anyway.

This hair is used for creating wefts or for services like fusion. A new line of hair is now available called PreBonded. PreBonded hair is considered “bulk” hair, but it is bound into “tips” or “plugs.”

PreBonded hair is sold in two styles. It comes in I tips or U tips. There are other names like stick tip vs nail tips etc. “I” tips look like the end of a shoelace and these tips are suitable for use with Linkies, Shrinkies and Fusion methods. “U” tips are only suitable for fusion attachment methods. U tips rely on their tips (which are made of fusion glue) to be heated and attached to the natural hair.

I” tips are for use with varied attachment methods. I tips cannot be installed with their glued tips alone because they do not have enough fusion glue on the tip. You can use the I tips for Fusion if you add a drop more fusion glue before applying.  The only difference between I and U tips is the amount of fusion glue found on the tip.

Human extension hair has several grades. Much of the industry’s hair has been chemically processed to remove the cuticle from the hair shaft. This hair may be referred to as “stripped”. This hair has a hard time maintaining moisture and will need to have a good conditioning treatment often.

It is also important to know the cuticle direction of human hair. Human hair often ends up with a mixed cuticle direction. This hair may tangle easily. Double drawn refers to a process by which a company sorts through the hair to remove opposing cuticle shafts. In contrast, Remy is a term which means that the hair was cut off in “pony tail” fashion and has been bundled to ensure that the cuticles are all in the same direction.

A word on texture: Hair is also labeled according to texture. Some will be natural; others will be processed to maintain a certain texture. Yaky (or yaki) refers to a hair which has a slight “crimp” to it. This hair matches courser hair or relaxed afro hair. European or “silky” means that it does not have that kink and is stick straight. European and yaky can come in a variety of ways. They can be body wave, deep wave, straight etc. Body wave means it has a smooth long wave. French wave has a definite wave to it. Straight means straight. There are many other curl varieties but these are the most common.

Just because a hair is labeled “European” does not mean that its genetic origin was actually European. It may in fact be a silky/european texture but the hair itself may be Chinese, Indian or something entirely different. Chinese hair will have a thicker shaft and will feel a tiny bit more course. Indian hair is finer and will feel a bit closer to a European origin.
